The Demimondaines – Redemption Hymns EP
If you’re looking for a band that revel in unadulterated dance –inducing rock, then look no further than The Demimondaines. Tearing Scarborough’s scene up since their appearance in 2012, the Demi’s material has always been catchy, complex and crammed with energy, and their new EP is no exception.
The first track, ‘Wasting My Time’, kicks straight in with a punchy riff and a rhythm that is very much exemplary of the Demimondaines’ signature style. The heavy overlaying bassline from Chris Long draws you to get up and dance – if not immediately, then you’ll definitely be pulled in by the chorus.
Next up is ‘How Does It Feel?’, a slightly slower but very emphatic track that begins with a distorted synth immediately grabbing the ears, to be joined by a smooth, heavy bassline. Held together by drummer Mark Staton, whose playing never fails to be both complex and hit the perfect rhythm, this track is perfect single fodder.
Third track, ‘Beat Goes On’, begins with a funky bass and synth combo leading into distorted heavy chords and singer Jon Anderson’s unique vocals, styled with some interesting distortion that really makes the track tick. The most prominent feature of this song is the hip-shaking guitar interlude after each chorus, guaranteed to get you gyrating.
The EP finishes with ‘Not Fading Out’, which launches with a typically infectious beat and another smooth, sweet bassline, perfectly complimented as always by Marcus McInerney’s delicate, melodic keys section. The chorus features a fantastically uplifting bounce that, with the floating high notes of the keys, just makes the listener feel happy inside. I challenge you not to smile.
In my opinion, The Demimondaines are most certainly a local band to watch.
