Watermark Nights at the Watermark Cafe
Watermark Nights launched on Sunday, 7th September, and is the successor to the popular Driftwood Music Club which previously ran at the same venue.
The premise is simple and elegant – basically, you book a table, have a meal and drinks and listen to some great music. You may also be lucky enough to win a prize in the interval raffle. Beer lovers are also able to partake of some wonderful real ale, courtesy of Wold Top Brewery – very welcome sponsors of the event.
The venue prides itself on bringing quality music to an intimate setting, where the audience can enjoy a meal whilst listening to music at a sensible volume. The bands include regular favourites like “Fire & Rain” (The music of James Taylor and Carole King) and Rich Adams with The Great American Songbook. The venue also encourages new talent, and even some very old talent!
The club is run by Bob Walker, who has worked professionally in music for 44 years and helped to run the Driftwood Club previously.
Situated in The Watermark Café in Scarborough’s North Bay, the season got off to a flying start for it’s opening night, with a fully booked café and additional guests who filled every available square inch of floor space.
The music for the launch was provided by old favourites Rich Adams and The Great American Songbook which, as you would expect, featured many classics; “Pennies From Heaven”, “Mack The Knife”, “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “You Make Me Feel So Young”, plus a few songs from other genres. Anyone who has seen Rich before knows that they will not only be treated to wonderful music, they will also be entertained by the witty, and friendly, presentation. Mention must also be made of the band, all seasoned professionals. Dave Clegg not only played sublime piano, he was also responsible for a majority of the musical arrangements. Tony Turner played bass, Tom Townsend held the drum chair, leaving Dave Kemp on Baritone and Tenor Sax to put the icing on the cake.
The night maintained a party atmosphere throughout, aided in no part by the wonderful management and staff of the café.
As if things could not get better the view on leaving was of Scarborough Castle silhouetted by a full moon – a view visible from within the café.
The launch was followed up with a visit from Kate Peters – last seen in Sarborough at Coastival earlier in the year (read the Yorkshire Coast Gigs interview with Kate here) – accompanied by Ian Chalk and the Mike Gordon Trio, and subsequently played host to the ever-popular Fire & Rain, before taking a week’s break for Scarborough Jazz Festival. The event returns this Sunday, 5th October, with Kieran Halpin.

Tables need to be booked in advance via Bob and, whilst there is no entry charge, patrons are expected to have a meal. The premises are licensed and a wide range of drinks are available, including fine real ale from our sponsors Wold Top Brewery.
