The Stirling Castle hosted the fourth Brid on the Map event on July 18th, headlined by Sam Scherdel with support from Don’t Fret the Poet and Reverie, offering attendees an evening of musical euphoria.
Picture this: You have just finished work; you need a caffeine boost. You step into The Stirling Castle, where lively energy fills the room even before the night begins, the hazy air and the last notes of sound checks setting an atmosphere buzzing with anticipation. Work disappears, replaced by a gradual surge of Mountain Dew–like exhilaration. In this supportive environment for original music, the aura is electrifying. Bridlington may be a small seaside town, but the music scene is expansive, a perfect start to the weekend.
Reverie
Reverie, a Scarborough based band, opened the show with a captivating performance. From lead singer Callum’s opening note, we were transported into their world of hypnotic vocals and melodiously blended musicianship. Pure escapism, with a lingering desire to prolong the moment.
The set blended indie rock and folk influences, the mesmerising grit in Callum’s voice holding the audience spellbound. The songs’ tempo shifts energised the audience and amplified the impact of the vocals. A band with rhythmic prowess of energetic drums, harmonious guitars, driving basslines, and powerful vocals – what more could you desire?
They performed their latest single ‘Lighthouse,’ (recently recorded live at Beckview Studios for their collaborative podcast with Yorkshire Coast Gigs CIC: the North Sea Sound Check podcast – check it out on all major streaming platforms.) The emotive vocals and illustrative melodies depict a tantalising Scarborough love story that resonates deeply.
Don’t Fret the Poet
Bridlington locals Don’t Fret the Poet were up next. The members’ ability to balance demanding schedules and find time to create exceptional music is astonishing, as some members are involved in up to five bands. The set showcased the extraordinary vocals and lyrical wit of frontman Fin Hines, transcendent and virtuosic lead guitar from Jamie Hayward, melodic drive and soaring harmonies from bassist Lee Norgate, and rhythmic wizardry from ray of sunshine drummer Elliot Joesbury.
The set blended folk and rock elements, enhancing the storytelling lyrics; this artistic style could be compared to Bob Dylan and Donovan. Notably the song ‘Stowaways’ stood out for its breathtaking harmonies and lead vocals that infused the set with emotional resonance. This song is an invitation to sing along, with its catchy enthralling lyrics drawing you in, creating a vivid picture. The rhythm section builds to a climax, enhancing the stillness of the song when it fades, making it more impactful.
Sam Scherdel
Sam Scherdel, fresh from Glastonbury 2025, headlined the night setting the stage on fire from the first note with his infectious energy, embodying the ‘Yorkshire Bruce Springsteen’ moniker. Scherdel’s distinctive gravelly voice evokes a gratifying sensory experience, like an itch being satisfied on the brain that you want to endure repeatedly.
The set integrated traces of indie rock and poetic, soulful lyrics, with passionate vocals, three warm expressive guitars, resonant bass, and dynamic drums making it a memorable experience. The band’s tight chemistry and exceptional cohesion demonstrated the evident practice and dedication that had gone into their performance. The performance was incredibly confident, complemented by Sam’s characterful presence, making Scherdel effortlessly endearing as an artist and a person.
Sam’s recently released acoustic single, ‘If We Danced’, is out on major streaming services; performed live her and featuring relatable lyrics, gritty vocals and expressive harmonica, standing out for its emotional intensity. After the show, Sam expressed his enjoyment, echoing the audience’s enthusiasm. He described the experience as “one of the best gigs in a long, long time,” praising the healthy creative scene, supporting it wholeheartedly.
