Yorkshire Coast Gigs sent Kath Dunn-Mines to the Cask for a Friday night filled with four acts from around the region.  Deep Sea Daggers, Velvet Tuxedo, Mac Turner and Dan Solan, 24th October 2025.

We’re getting used to these three-act line-ups on Friday nights at Scarborough’s Cask Club, bringing us a mix of local favourites, out-of-town discoveries and new and emerging talent.  This particular Friday we also managed to catch some acoustic covers in the upstairs bar courtesy of Whitby-based Dan Solan; a delight and a gentle start to the early evening for post-work pub-goers and pre-gig photographers (there was actually more than one of us, though we are a rare breed).

Downstairs in the Cask Club, the weekend and late night music and disco venue element of the Cask & Keg’s ample square footage, was Mac Turner, a Scarborian now residing in Hull but making his second trip to the venue since relaunch and a welcome return at that.  With some intriguing originals, such as Wish I Was In Interpol, and some dazzling takes on covers, we made it All Along the Watchtower; while Glory Box was indeed glorious.

Hull’s Velvet Tuxedo were new to me before this gig but their aesthetic style immediately fascinated, before their music utterly consumed.  Think seventies bluesy vibes, great band chemistry, and all the rhythm – all rolling along like a fast night-time drive on clear moonlit roads… Self-described as “dabbling in Garage / Freakbeat / Psych / R&B Narrow Racket”, I can only profess that I liked it very much and was not alone in this sentiment.

Local lads Deep Sea Daggers brought the evening to a close with their trademark riffs, lyricism and pulsating indie-alternative rock sound.  They have a steadily-grown back catalogue of now-familiar tracks and a sturdy following.  You can catch them again when they head to York’s Fulford Arms alongside Stray Scene and Graham Watson – if any night sounds like a guaranteed belter, it must surely be this.  Tickets available here.
