There are few concert venues in the UK that can match the setting of Scarborough Open Air Theatre, and on the warm summer evening of July 4th 2026, David Gray proved exactly why it remains one of the most spectacular places to experience live music.
With the stage framed by the evening sky gradually fading into darkness, the atmosphere was special from the outset. The audience, spanning generations of loyal fans, created a relaxed yet expectant mood that perfectly suited Gray’s reflective and heartfelt songs.
The Divine Comedy took to the stage first delivering a sophisticated, witty and musically flawless performance. Neil Hannon’s charismatic stage presence, rich vocals and clever storytelling captivated the audience throughout. From beloved classics to newer material, every song was beautifully performed, creating an unforgettable set filled with warmth, humour and exceptional musicianship. They had the crowd dancing and singing, warming them up nicely for David Gray.
From the opening number, a track off his 2025 album Leave Taking, David Gray’s unmistakable voice was in excellent form, carrying both power and vulnerability. His band provided a rich, polished accompaniment, allowing favourites old and new to shine. Classics such as Babylon, Sail Away and Please Forgive Me were met with huge singalongs, while newer material demonstrated that Gray continues to evolve as an artist without losing the emotional honesty that has defined his career.
The production values throughout the evening were outstanding. The sound quality was beautifully balanced, ensuring every lyric and instrumental nuance could be heard clearly, even in the vast outdoor setting. The lighting design complemented the music perfectly, shifting effortlessly from intimate, warm tones during quieter moments to dramatic washes of colour for the more uplifting anthems. As darkness fell, the visual spectacle became even more impressive, enhancing the emotion of each performance without ever overshadowing the music itself.
Large video screens on either side of the stage ensured everyone, regardless of where they were seated, enjoyed an excellent view of the performance. A particularly welcome feature was the presence of a British Sign Language interpreter, whose expressive signing enabled deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members to fully share in the experience. It was a thoughtful and inclusive addition that reflected the venue’s commitment to making live music accessible to all.
Scarborough Open Air Theatre once again demonstrated why it has earned such a strong reputation. The combination of its unique location, facilities and welcoming atmosphere creates an experience that goes beyond simply watching a concert.
David Gray delivered a performance full of warmth, sincerity and timeless songwriting, while the stunning surroundings elevated the evening into something truly memorable. It was a concert that reminded everyone present of the power of live music to bring people together, leaving the audience with lasting memories long after the final encore, which included my personal favorite, This Year’s Love, which had the audience joining in, waving their torches in the air, creating a magical atmosphere – a perfect way to end the night.
