The What / Who / When / Where / Why / How much / What else?
for
The Big Charity Shindig.
But before we even begin:
Big heads up – bring cash for donations and raffle; cards for the bar.
And
Big love to those who have donated raffle prizes or sponsored the event – this list will get updated but so far this includes:
Beckview Studios, The Cask & Keg, Yorkshire Coast Gigs CIC, Yesterday Vintage, Anthony Phillips Photography, Record Revivals, Metalines Promotions, Mojo’s Music Cafe, The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Graham Rhodes and Yorkshire Coast Gigs.
What:
The Big Charity Shindig. An all-dayer organised by Shindig band partnered with Yorkshire Coast Gigs, supported by Yesterday Vintage, Beckview Studios and of course, The Cask and Keg where the event will take place.
Who:
The line-up features:
Shindig (headlining): Dance-inducing, hardcore-infused post-punk; chant along to Mr Happy and get closer on the dancefloor to Two Step (but watch out for lamp-posts on the way home). With recent addition Sproose Moose joining the band, this will be their first hometown gig in the new format, but get a flavour of the Shindig vibes here and here.
Graham Watson: Who is Graham? We are all Graham. But even Graham has to change sometimes, and with a new singer and new drummer, Scarborough will get its first chance to check out the irreverent Graham’s new line-up (Brid gets to witness it on Thursday 14th, avid followers may wish to know). Find their epic first EP here and on various other platforms.
Low Press: The newest band on the line-up, but already attracting attention, they self-describe as sad songs from the seaside. However, besides being a great tune, their video for Inside My Head is also one of the cutest things we’ve ever seen. Ghosts in arcades? We’re utterly sold.
Panda Lasagne: No pandas, no pasta, but possibly cheese on bread and 20 nugs. Anarchic insolence abounds, and bloody good fun it tends to be, whenever these frenetically-paced Whitby punks make an outing. Listen here.
Jack Robertson Band: Jack’s stunning debut album, Danube Blues, was released last year and hot on its heels, he’ll be releasing his second album very soon, with single, The Morning After, out now. Jack’s Bob Dylan-esque folk rock will also see him playing a supporting slot when tribute act Rob Dylan visits Scarborough Spa later this year.
Don’t Fret the Poet: Don’t Fret the Poet pack a punch of lyrical wonder and rhythmic folk; whether they choose to make you laugh, cry or just listen agog to the storytelling and characterful vocals. Check out some videos here; as you’ll see, they sometimes pull a bait and switch, offering two for the price of one with Sproose Moose and the Speedholes.
Serial Killer Glasses: They describe themselves as making a noisy racket. We tried to say it a different way but why fight perfection? Experimental in approach, energetic in performance, anti-establishment in oh-so-many ways, if you haven’t yet experienced the output from young punks SKG, correct the error of your ways ASAP. Check out their EP, the Fair and Equal Establishment, here.
Suko: Another young band, who adeptly switch their line-up around to play around with tone and style, with a generally grunge era /alternative rock vibe. They started life as Raspberry Jam, and have developed with great aplomb since then, becoming Suko along the way; they will definitely demand your attention.
Socket: Riot-girl insouciance on the one hand, witty lyricism and anarchic riffs on another, and if we had a third hand it would be raised aloft punching the air as we shouted and moshed along with this four-piece who make waves whenever they perform. Like SKG, a fine example of some of the amazing young punk rock outfits that call the Yorkshire Coast home.
Nils Arnold: Nils will perform a solo set of his music to start the day off, ahead of a much-anticipated original line-up reunion for much-loved outfit, The Northern Riots (taking place in Leeds, 1st August, supporting Steve Woods and the Hoods). Check out more here.
The evening will end with the PHabulous PHNKT playing a set to take the dancefloor denizens into the wee small hours – read our recent interview with him here; and throughout the latter half of the event, your compere will be the master of the mic, Graham Rhodes, rock and roll poet extraordinaire. (Also: He’s about to release a new autobiography and we’re frankly honoured to have been given a pre-publication proof to peruse.)
As things stand, these are the expected stage times but these may be subject to change.
Compere Graham Rhodes will read selected rock & roll poetry throughout the event.
