We caught up with James Koppert about a benefit gig he is organising to raise funds for Survive, a charity supporting survivors of sexual abuse. Taking place at The Crescent Lounge this Saturday, 2nd Nov, from 6pm onwards, it will feature an eclectic mix of punk rock acts.

James is a member of Jenkem Revolt, a relatively new outfit who were on the original line up; when we meet, the gig line up is in flux; due to the work schedule of one of Jenkem Revolt’s members, they cannot now take part, and as for headliners Deadbeat at Dawn, their lead vocal artist had left the band and whilst they are quickly realigning themselves, this gig was too close to be able to rehearse anyone new. So that left Active Minds, Orchard and Captain South America on the bill. Still a hefty and intriguing line up, but James was keen to add at least one more band back into the menu.

That menu already included:

Orchard: A Scarborough-based two piece, consisting of Joel and Rosie. Politically charged garage indie might describe their musical outlook; their debut album, Til You Fall Down, is available on Bandcamp and James is excited to be bringing them into the mix for the gig.

Captain South America: Hailing from Bradford. They are multicultural folk-punk fusion, a three-piece combining a flautist, guitar and percussionist and vocalist. Their catchphrase is Anarchy, Liberty, Equality, Solidarity and Anti-fascism.

Active Minds: The band with the longest time served; a two piece hailing from Scarborough, brothers Bobs and Set only rarely appear in their hometown. With more than twenty albums and EP’s to their discography, this hardcore punk duo have been ‘DIY since 1986’ and have recently returned from a European tour.

So who will be joining this already epic line up?

James has added Serial Killer Glasses to the mix. This Scarborough band includes Theo Kendall, Radio 3 Young Composer of the Year for Great Britain; some of you may have caught them at No.59 Records over the summer as part of The Scarborough Fair.

The event is Pay What You Want, with proceeds going to Survive, a charitable service which delivers specialist trauma-informed services and trauma-informed interventions to adult survivors of sexual violence and abuse across North Yorkshire.  There will also be a raffle on the night with some great prizes already donated for the cause.
