The Nag’s Head in Scalby was packed on Thursday evening for the launch of the weekly “All Ears” open mic sessions. Run by Phil Hooley with PA, keyboard and guitars are set up, the evening starts at around 8.30pm. Here’s what Phil had to say about the first one which took place on 9th October:
“The audience were treated to a fantastic variety of musical talent. The evening began with a set from the young saxophone quartet, Sax On The Beach, who treated the audience to some of their jazz arrangements, and they were followed by a lively set from the twin fiddles and guitar of The Happy Shoppers trio.
Somehow fitting themselves into the small room, five piece combo Savannah then provided a polished performance of some jazz classics, after which the mood changed again as John Womack and friends launched into some foot-stomping Cajun music.
Quirky duo Wingnut and The Wizard brought the house down with their entertaining covers of U2 and Beatles songs. A hard act to follow, but there was more to come in the form of solo acoustic act Paddy Clark-Irons and close harmony Americana trio The Dirty Hot Dogs.
The evening closed with a couple of Neil Young songs from Neil Hebron, and the audience drifted away with the distinct impression that they had been treated to a whole festival in one evening, and, in case they didn’t know already, that Scarborough definitely has talent.”
The organisers hope to make this a regular weekly event.
