As we head ever closer to this years fabulous Musicport Festival, tickets are selling fast and festival goers are being urged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible to be certain of not missing out and being disappointed.
This year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever with various fringe events talking place ahead of, and during, the weekend in October including the following Arts Council funded events that have just been announced:
A performance on Friday 11th October, in advance of the festival, by the Tashi Lhunpo Monks from Tibet – demonstrating their ritual chants and dancing in stunning costumes – free @ St Ninian’s Church, Baxtergate, Whitby – Starts 7.30pm.
Musicport Big Draw Project – 5 local schools will work with artists Quentin Budworth and Bridget Wilkinson to create 5 large pieces of artwork with a musical and cultural theme which will be installed by Whitby Pavilion in the Exhibition Hall. A sixth panel will be created during the festival, and they will make a permanent feature in the room, all with a definite Musicport theme. The panels will be unveiled at the opening of the festival on Friday 18th October.
Fire display and procession to the opening in the Exhibition Hall. Musicport favourites Forro Porro will lead local school musicians (who will have worked with the band in advance) marching into the Pavilion for the opening, and a performance by Whitby Community Choir of their BBC-commissioned piece “Standing On The Edge Of The World” by Rebecca Gross. Free entry event.
Chromavan – a wonderful experience in colour, housed in a caravan, will be in town during the day on Friday 18th October where there will be a chance for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in an intense and relaxing colour bath and to try it out for free. From Friday teatime it will be at the Pavilion where it will be available to all festival-goers.
MASS UKULELE JAM….massed ukuleles with Jacqui Wicks and colleagues from Ossett Ukulele Philharmonia. A chance for uke players from far and wide to bring their ukuleles and join a great free event on the morning of Saturday 19th October. A downloadable songbook will be available from the Musicport website and Facebook page so that participants can practise in advance. Free entry event.

With over 50 acts in one indoor venue over 5 stages this 3 day event will take you on a world journey with acts from Tuva, Denmark, Peru, Zimbabwe , Bosnia , USA, Tanzania, Mali, Iran & Egypt.
With Neville Staple (The Specials & Fun Boy Three) and his band headlining on Friday night, Saharan blues band Tamikrest on Saturday & the highly acclaimed & mesmerising Bosnian singer Amira finishing the Sunday proceedings, there are many hidden treasures amongst the wide-ranging & ambitious programme including the legendary Neil Innes who will perform live on stage on Sunday 20th @ 9:30pm.
Neil has also very kindly agreed for Musicport Festival to show the biographical film “The Seventh Python” earlier that same day on Sunday @ 3pm.

Renowned for its friendly atmosphere and the quality of the acts it books, the festival is now in its 14th year.

Musicport was established in 2000 to promote live music and music education in Whitby and the surrounding area with its primary event being Musicport World Music Festival each autumn. Over the last thirteen years the festival has grown year on year and has established itself as a prestigious event in the festival calendar attracting major names such as Rachid Taha, The Buena Vista Social Club presents Cachaito Lopez etc, Toumani Diabate, Levellers,Misty In Roots, Courtney Pine, Talvin Singh, Richard Hawley, Hugh Masekela, Chumbawamba, Altan, Mory Kante, Osibisa, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, & Los De Abajo.
As well as the festival Musicport also run a regular concert programme (The Compass Club) both in Whitby Artists who have appeared as part of previous concert programmes include Jah Wobble’s Invaders Of The Heart, Midge Ure, Daby Balde, Yusa, The Easy Star All Stars, Hazel O’Connor, Asere, Black Umfolosi, Sharron Shannon, Waterson Carthy, & Kate Rusby.
They are partners in the North Yorkshire Youth Music Action Zone and also run a regular programme of education workshops and activities.
** These events have been made possible in part thanks to the support of the European Commission in the context of its awareness-raising campaign on EU enlargement. The objective of this campaign is to inform citizens in the current EU Member States about the enlargement policy of the European Union and the countries in the process.
Croatia became the EU’s 28th Member State on 1 July 2013.
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey are candidate countries or potential candidates for EU membership. Some of them are already in the negotiation process or waiting to start, while others have been promised the prospect of membership when they are ready.
This campaign provides factual information about the EU enlargement process and encourages EU citizens to get to know more about the people, cultures and heritage of the countries involved. It seeks to challenge existing perceptions and offers a possibility to discover new facts through travelling photo exhibitions, events featuring performers and contributions from the aspiring countries and documentaries highlighting some of their individual accomplishments… In this way the campaign seeks to present the human side of the EU enlargement process and to illustrate how the potential accession of new countries may offer new opportunities to people on both sides.
