Three of Britain’s finest chamber musicians will be performing popular works by Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms at the Stephen Joseph Theatre on 10 July.

The acclaimed Cropper Welsh Roscoe Trio: violinist Peter Cropper, ex-leader and founder member of The Lindsays, Moray Welsh, former Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Martin Roscoe, one of Britain’s finest pianists, are on tour with Music in the Round.

The programme spans the 19th century golden period of chamber music composition and features some of the most innovative and best-loved trios of their time. Haydn’s ‘Piano Trio in B flat’, for instance, is an example of his stylistically mature later works, and among his more exploratory pieces.

However, from the programme for the evening, Beethoven’s dramatic ‘C minor trio’ is probably the most innovative for its time. Haydn felt it too revolutionary for public consumption, urging Beethoven not to include it in his ‘Opus 1’; its harmonic, melodic, and structural tension was unprecedented. Even today it’s capable of shock, suspense, and surprise.

Schubert’s ‘Notturno’, written 30 years later, also catches us by surprise with its harmonic turbulence; the second movement contains one of his memorable long, aching melodies.

Completing the set of trios for the evening is Brahms’s expansive trio of 1882, once gorgeously described as “an organic swoon”.

The concert starts at 7.30pm on Thursday 10 July. Tickets, priced from £10 to £17.50, are available from the Box Office on 01723 370 541 and online at www.sjt.uk.com
