Thousands turn out for weekend festival
Organisers of this weekend’s Coastival 2014 in Scarborough have hailed the festival a ‘huge’ success.
Thousands flocked to the three-day festival bringing big crowds to more than 100 different events.
Biggest crowds gathered for Orpheus the Mariner, an epic two-part seafront street performance held on Friday and Saturday evenings.
It included creating the largest puppet in the world, with a giant puppet suspended from a crane on Saturday evening.
Coastival’s organisers, Scarborough-based arts development agency Create, say Coastival 2014 exceeded all expectations.
Director Wendy Holroyd said: “Coastival 2014 looks like being our most successful yet. Despite the weather we had fantastic crowds for Orpheus the Mariner and a great turnout for all the other events over the weekend. At the same time the feedback we have had has been tremendous. I thank everyone who came along and created such a fantastic atmosphere for the weekend and also all those people who took part in and helped organise Coastival 2014 – it was fantastic!”
Other highlights over the weekend included a performance by the Brand New Heavies, supported by Nubiyan Twist, two exciting jazz days, featuring Kate Peters and the Heavy Horns and Yorkshire jazz favourite Clare Teal and the Community Band, two full days of Acoustic Lounge sessions and the Musicport “Lock in Dance Show” featuring the Demon Barbers, on Sunday afternoon.
