Happy Mondays

Melon-twisting awesomeness: 4/5

Support sets: 'HarleyLikesMusic', 'Mark Starkey', '808 State'.

OK I'll admit, I've been slightly late to board the Happy Mondays' wagon. Be it if you will, a generation thing. Whilst pill-popping Madchester types were 'living it large' at the turn of the 90's, I would be starting school. It couldn't be helped. Fast-forwarding to 2005, I took a punt on buying a used copy of their Greatest Hits compilation which indeed turned out to be a cracking decision and has found its way onto playlist rotation ever since.

Only 10 minutes before the headliners were due, the skies opened with a heavy downpour, an unfortunate (but inevitable) side-effect of a roofless, yet nonetheless excellent venue. The good news, this lasted all but 5 minutes and stayed dry throughout the rest of the show.

Always a privilege to see a veteran band as intended with all original members intact, and they did not disappoint. Kicking off with an unforgettable staple track, "Loose Fit" got the crowd warmed up to the forthcoming superbly layered and hit-studded set list. To any 2013 newbies to the scene they proved that there is far more to the band than "that one song that everybody knows", genre skipping between post-punk, funk, blues, psychedelia, indie and dance all in one set. "Kinky Afro" and "Step On" were further highlights that had rain sodden gig-goers on their feet. The encore performance was an extended version of their 80's classic "Wrote for Luck".

It's no secret that Shaun Ryder has somewhat lost his diction over the years (as featuring on a certain Gorillaz track with the misheard hook-line "it's there"). This however mattered not, contributing distinctively to the unmistakable Mondays' sound. Bez shook his maracas along with the crazy dancing we know him best for and Mark, Gary and the two Pauls provided a tight rhythm section throughout. All smiles and high spirits as fans left the arena, having enjoyed a sublime set from a band nowhere near past their prime yet.
