Scarborough Spa Orchestra, Sun Court

Hidden deep in the cellars and attics of Scarborough Spa is a vast library of music, belonging to the legendary Scarborough Spa Orchestra.

Whilst carefully combing through the extensive music archives, Musical Director Paul Laidlaw, Music Librarian Stephen Walker and Orchestra Member Graham Quilter have come across a wide variety of musical gems in amongst the neglected pieces.

Boasting over 6000 items, some of these unique pieces date back to the year the orchestra was founded, back in 1912. At the time, standard compositions were far more complex; with complete symphonies and concertos featuring in even the most light-hearted of morning concerts. Nowadays, with an orchestra more streamlined in size, its widespread fame is built on a reputation for playing the very best in popular light music; throwing in some nostalgic classics for good measure.

Each of these newly-discovered treasures will make an appearance in The Spa Orchestra's concerts throughout the summer season. Many of these pieces will likely be new to the audience; others, though possibly familiar, have inexplicably fallen out of Scarborough Spa Orchestra's regular repertoire. The collective are delighted to be welcoming some new tunes into this year's concert programme.

In addition, Paul Laidlaw is also in the process of writing his own arrangements for The Spa Orchestra. The collective's library already contains well over fifty of Paul's arrangements, and for 2016 he also promises hand-picked selections from modern stage musicals and some exciting film themes.

New music can also be introduced into concerts when supporters generously make donations for the purchase of orchestral scores. These gestures are always greatly appreciated, and enable the orchestra to hire music from the Light Music Society's excellent music library for specific performances, or even to purchase sets of music outright for the orchestra's permanent use.

Though The Spa Orchestra is an old Scarborough tradition, it has never rested on its laurels. The group prides itself on being progressive, whilst still remaining true to its roots as the UK's only remaining professional seaside orchestra - playing timeless tunes which spectators travel from far and wide to enjoy.

The orchestra's 2016 summer season will open with a morning concert on Monday 6th June; finishing with a spectacular grand finale concert on Thursday 8th September.
