Yorkshire Coast Gigs are delighted to announce the first round of artists due to headline internationally renowned arts festival Musicport 2016, held from 21st - 23rd October at the Whitby Pavilion.

With over twenty world-class acts on the roster so far, this year's offerings are shaping up to be a menagerie of musical, theatrical and dance-based delights; with reputed "world's oldest girlband" Mahotella Queens holding the coveted Saturday night headline slot and 2012 Olympics-commissioned poet Lemn Sissay MBE also set to appear.

Formed in 1964 in their native South Africa, female collective Mahotella Queens (formed of Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu and Mildred Mangxola) are continuing the legacy which has inspired so many of their followers. Selling out shows worldwide for over 50 years, the talented trio's songs draw on rural Zulu music; featuring three-part harmonies and a guitar-driven sound. In the words of band member Hilda Tloubatla, what makes them seem so effortlessly talented is their many years of happy musical collaboration: "We've got the spirit of true musicians... it's in us... we've been together for a long time, hence we know exactly what to do!"

Poet-playwright, author and foster child Lemn Sissay MBE is a spoken word force to be reckoned with. As the first poet to be commissioned for the 2012 Olympics, official poet for the FA Cup Final, and associate artist at the Southbank Centre, as well as recently elected Chancellor of Manchester University, Sissay boasts an impressive CV and a poignant wordplay repertoire. He follows in the footsteps of many other poets who have previously appeared at Musicport; including Linton Kwesi Johnson, Zena Edwards, Labi Siffre, Dr John Cooper Clarke and Jack Mapanje.

Other acts set to feature on the line-up include: The Magic Numbers / Lynched (Ireland) / Soupsongs Live (The Songs of Robert Wyatt) / Kathryn Tickell & The Side / Sarah Jane Morris & Bloody Rain Band / Black Umfolosi (Zimbabwe) / Jamie Smith's Mabon (Wales) / Martin Taylor MBE / Don Letts / Maz O'Connor / Geff Berner (Canada) / Adam Ben Ezra (Israel) / Michael Messer's Mitra (UK/ India) / Rory McLeod and the Familiar Strangers / Quraishi (Afghanistan) / Himmerland (Denmark) / Martin Alvrado / Maia Barrouh (Japan / France) / Arstidir (Iceland) / Project 12 (UK/ India) with many more to be confirmed.
